One-third of adults fall each year, and of those adults who fall, 20-30% suffer moderate to severe injuries. As a person ages, the risk of falling increases, but it is a normal part of aging.
Common causes of balance problems include:
Falls and fear of falling can inhibit living a fulfilling lifestyle. If you have experienced a fall or feel that your balance is worsening, it may be time to see a physical therapist. A physical therapist will start by assessing your fall risk and reasons why your balance has worsened.

At our clinics, we have a specialized machine that we can use to test patients’ static balance called the Biosway. The Biosway utilizes a standardized test to predict a person’s risk for falling based on their age.
This device gives us quantitative data to help us assess progress through your physical therapy program.

After the assessment, the physical therapist will come up with a balance or strength exercise program based on your needs. We will also provide patient education on assistive device use if necessary.
The overall goal is to challenge your balance in order to help you improve your strength and help you become more confident with daily activities. We work to gain confidence with stepping up on a curb, performing stairs, walking in the community, or any activity you are struggling with.

Physical therapy will empower you to walk with confidence and avoid a life-altering fall.
